Mental health

Obsessive compulsive disorder.

An OCD comparison should focus on the specific therapy and clinician’s experience. General relaxation or a comfortable residence does not describe an OCD treatment programme.

Ask for an OCD-specific assessment

Discuss intrusive thoughts, compulsions, avoidance and the effect on everyday life. Ask how the clinician distinguishes OCD from other difficulties and establishes a shared treatment goal.

Understand the proposed treatment

NHS guidance describes cognitive behavioural therapy including exposure and response prevention, with medicines used where appropriate. Ask the clinician to explain the proposed approach and how it will be adapted to the individual.

Compare therapist experience

Ask about experience treating OCD, supervision and how progress is reviewed. A provider listing CBT among many therapies does not establish that every therapist delivers specialist OCD care.

Check intensity and practical support

Outpatient sessions, more intensive attendance and hospital care are different options. Ask how between-session work is supported, what happens if symptoms prevent attendance and whether family involvement could help.

Plan for everyday life

Compare how a programme helps transfer therapy into home, work and social settings. If considering a residential stay, ask how follow-up will address the situations that are difficult outside the treatment environment.

Questions for your assessment

  • Who would deliver OCD-specific CBT and exposure and response prevention?
  • How is therapy supported between sessions and after discharge?

Compare relevant services

These profiles are starting points for enquiries based on published service models. Confirm the specific clinician, condition expertise, current programme and appropriate level of care. Inclusion does not establish suitability for admission.

A common question

Does a provider offering CBT necessarily offer specialist OCD treatment?

No. Confirm the therapist’s relevant experience and the actual treatment plan, including whether exposure and response prevention is offered.
