Clarify the purpose of the appointment
You may be seeking an initial assessment, a second opinion, medication review or psychological support. Ask which pathway is offered and what developmental history or previous records the clinician requires.
Compare the assessment and report
Ask who carries out the assessment, their professional role, how other explanations are considered and what written report is included. Separate an assessment fee from the costs of follow-up or treatment.
Understand medication arrangements
Medication is not the only form of support and is not automatically appropriate for everyone. If prescribed, ask who monitors it, what appointments are needed and how ongoing prescriptions are funded.
Check continuity with the NHS
Do not assume a private diagnosis means a GP will accept shared prescribing. Discuss local arrangements with the provider and your GP before committing to a pathway that depends on them.
Include co-occurring concerns
Explain anxiety, depression, sleep problems and substance use so the clinician can assess how they affect care. Ask how ADHD support connects to any separate addiction or mental health treatment.
Questions for your assessment
- What is included in assessment, the report and subsequent reviews?
- Who provides and pays for continuing prescribing if shared care is not agreed?

A common question
Is residential rehab a standard way to treat ADHD?
No. ADHD needs an appropriate assessment and support pathway. Residential addiction treatment may address a separate co-occurring need.
