Addiction

Prescription drug dependence.

Dependence on a prescribed medicine can occur during treatment and is not automatically the same as addiction. Seek a clinical review before changing a medicine or choosing a withdrawal programme.

Begin with the prescriber

Discuss the medicine, dose, how long you have taken it and any previous withdrawal symptoms. Do not abruptly stop a medicine such as a benzodiazepine without clinical advice.

Compare clinical capability

Ask who oversees medication changes, how your usual prescriber is involved and how the programme manages both withdrawal and the condition for which the medicine was prescribed.

Different medicines need different plans

Opioid pain medicines, benzodiazepines and sleeping medicines should not be grouped into one withdrawal timetable. Ask which medicine-specific expertise the proposed team has and what information it needs from your prescriber.

Understand the duration and setting

A residential stay may cover only part of a longer reduction plan. Ask how the timetable is reviewed and which clinician remains responsible after you leave.

Keep the original condition in view

Pain, anxiety or insomnia may still require treatment. A useful programme explains how it addresses that need alongside medication review and how any referrals or additional fees are handled.

Questions for your assessment

  • How will you work with my existing prescriber?
  • Does the programme cover the whole medication plan or only one stage?

Compare relevant services

These profiles are starting points for enquiries based on published service models. Confirm the specific clinician, condition expertise, current programme and appropriate level of care. Inclusion does not establish suitability for admission.

Considering a residential programme abroad?

THE BALANCE and COGNIFUL describe private programmes for mental health and addiction concerns. Ask how the proposed programme would address your assessed needs. Both belong to THE BALANCE GROUP, and their residential treatment is outside the UK.

A common question

Must physical dependence be treated as addiction?

No. A clinician should distinguish the pattern of use and needs involved, while addressing withdrawal and the original reason for prescribing.
